Allah Almighty selected Muhammad (PBUH) as the last Prophet and sent down every commandment and instruction through angel Gabriel. However, there was one commandment that was not sent through Gabriel and that is the order of offering daily prayers or Salat. This commandment was so sacred and important that instead of revealing it through the angel. Allah called Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to himself to disclose the order.
In order to announce that Muslims have to offer daily prayers, Allah brought Prophet (PBUH) to the seventh heaven, the place where even Gabriel cannot go. Prophet (PBUH) used the vehicle that no one had ever used and will never use and went through the path no other soul has ever witnessed. From this incident, one can imagine how important it is to offer Salat and how evil it is to abandon it.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was first ordered by Allah to offer 50 prayers a day. However, Prophet (PBUH) asked Allah to make it easier for the Ummah and eventually number was reduced to 5 compulsory prayers a day with the blessings and reward of 50.
According to some famous Islamic scholars, it was a deliberate process to reduce the number from 50 to 5. Allah actually wanted Muslims to realize and teach us the true and actual importance that prayers should enjoy in every Muslim’s life. It is impossible to offer Salat 50 times a day because there will be not time to do anything else. This is the actual point because Salat is actually the real purpose of our life and there is no better way to illustrate this very purpose other than saying Salat. Everything else people do in their daily life is not more than just motion of limbs.
However, if we look around our surroundings, we find people busy in just opposite to what Allah wants them to do. As a fact of matter, our lives do not revolve around the religion and most importantly Salat but Muslims try to find time for them. For instance, if people are attending the class, Salat becomes the secondary option. Similarly, if one is roaming in the shopping mall or sitting in his office, Salat is not more than an afterthought.
Then there are those “Muslims” that do not offer Salat at all. The colors and excitements of life are more important to them than the actual purpose of their life. The abandonment of Salat has sever consequences as no other sin no matter how big it is, does not make a person disbeliever. However according to some scholars of high repute, abandoning of prayers does make you disbeliever or Non Muslim and everyone knows what will be the fate of such people on Judgment day.
The matter of Salat is so important for ever Muslim because the first question on the Judgment day will be about prayers. Despite of this fact, prayer is on the bottom of our priority lists and sometimes it does not find a place on that list. According to the Hadith of Holy Prophet (PB UH),
“The first thing which will be judged among a man’s deeds on the Day of Resurrection is the Prayer. If this is in good order then he will succeed and prosper but if it is defective then he will fail and will be a loser.” (Tirmidhi)
Allah says in Holy Quran,
"What led you into Hell-Fire?"They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;" (74:42-43)
Therefore, it is mandatory for every Muslims to offer at least compulsory prayers. In modern words, parents complain of lack of time to teach their teachers about how to offer prayers. This is a lame excuse because it is very east to accomplish through methods like online Quran tutoring and others. Whether you have time or not, you have to offer prayers and make others to pray.
Finally, if you want to avoid the wrath of Allah on Judgment day, ask forgiveness for your previous sins and start saying prayers regularly. It is necessary because, if you fail to please Allah on the most important day, hell will be your fate and the horrors and terrors of that place are simply unbearable.
